When I wrote Formation of Memories for the cellist/vocalist Susanna Mendlow, I was thinking about dreams and dreaming, memories and remembering, and where they intersect. How is it possible for memories to be so dreamlike, while dreams can seem to masquerade as memories? Formation of Memories attempts to convey this paradoxical nature of memories, which can seem simultaneously rich and fragmentary, blurry and vivid, distant and palpable.
