This piece is inspired by James Purdy’s novel, In a Shallow Grave, which tells the deeply strange story of a wounded soldier who has returned home, disfigured both physically and emotionally, hopelessly in love with a widow who lives down the road, yet bound to a life of solitude except for the company of his two assistants. Every day, one of the hired men reads to the soldier from a random assortment of books on topics ranging from botany to philosophy. Much like the music itself, these passages seem to circle around each other, progressing without any obvious logic yet tied together by an elusive sense of unity.
